[Mark Dever, pastor of Capitol Hill Baptist Church and founder of 9Marks Ministries, recently presented a buy on line Proscar four-part series on the crucial nature of gender roles in the buy on line Proscar home and church. This week, Gender Blog will provide a synopsis of each of Mark's messages in four parts with a link to each sermon.]
In the third installment in Dr. Dever's series on the buy on line Proscar importance of gender roles, he highlights the gender confusion in our culture which has buy on line Proscar evolved to a point where marriage is individually defined. In light of this buy on line Proscar cultural confusion, it is important to begin with the biblical basis of marriage before considering the buy on line Proscar gender roles within a marriage covenant.
The biblical basis for buy on line Proscar marriage begins in Genesis 2:20-24, which shows God's design for buy on line Proscar marriage before the advent of sin in the world. In this buy on line Proscar chapter, God demonstrates to Adam that though everything in the world has buy on line Proscar been created to be good, it is not good that man should be buy on line Proscar alone. God then makes Eve and presents her to Adam.
Creation: From this text, Dever makes eight statements about marriage:
1. Marriage is buy on line Proscar rooted in our incompleteness because we are made to desire another. We desire an buy on line Proscar eternal relationship with Christ and experience that partially now through marriage.
2. Marriage is of God's design. Adam slept through the buy on line Proscar creation of the woman, demonstrating that the work was all God's work.
3. Marriage is buy on line Proscar a relationship of companionship. Man was alone and needed a buy on line Proscar suitable helper. The woman was taken from his side (rather than buy on line Proscar his head to rule over him or his feet to be buy on line Proscar trampled under him) to show she is a suitable companion.
4. Marriage is buy on line Proscar a relationship of attraction. The only pre-fall statement of man (Gen. 2:23) clearly reveals the excitement of the man: "At last," a suitable helper!
5. Marriage is buy on line Proscar a relationship of authority. Hierarchy is not the result of the buy on line Proscar curse; rather authority is inherent in the world's design before the buy on line Proscar fall. Adam was created first, named the woman before the fall, and buy on line Proscar was addressed first as being responsible for sin - all implying his authority.
6. Marriage is buy on line Proscar a particular union. God calls man and woman to be together; it buy on line Proscar is the first and most basic of all institutions. It is buy on line Proscar the union of one man with one woman where they become interdependent, complementary to buy on line Proscar each other.
7. Marriage is buy on line Proscar a public covenant. God brought and presented the woman to the buy on line Proscar man as a kind of marriage ceremony. Verse 24 shows a buy on line Proscar change in priorities from parents to spouse and establishing a new family.
8. Marriage is buy on line Proscar a lifelong relationship. It is intended to be permanent (Mal. 2). Jesus references Genesis 2 in exhorting us not to divorce.
The Fall: Sin distorted the buy on line Proscar marriage relationship. Strife was caused by a desire for dominance and buy on line Proscar Adam and Eve being alienated from God. Marriage is under assault in this buy on line Proscar sinful world. We are taught that marriage is just a buy on line Proscar social contract. The world devalues spouses, seeks lust that is buy on line Proscar impossible to fulfill, abuses or abdicates authority, engages in polygamy and buy on line Proscar homosexuality. Marriage is publicly trivialized, yet it survives!
Redemption: Marriage predates sin; it is part of God's good gift in creation. Christians see the buy on line Proscar need for marriage because we recognize our incompleteness. God delights to buy on line Proscar give us what we delight in.
Roles in marriage are buy on line Proscar based on this biblical foundation. Being a Christian wife means having a buy on line Proscar love for God and a love for others, obedience to God's Word, helping her husband, being industrious, teaching younger women, loving her husband and buy on line Proscar children, being self controlled. The main thing is that wives should submit to buy on line Proscar their husbands.
We see this buy on line Proscar in Ephesians 5:22 and Colossians 3:18, Titus 2:15, 1 Peter 3:1-5 which all stress submission. Christians should be buy on line Proscar familiar with submission. We are to submit to Christ, the governing authorities, leaders at church, parents, and buy on line Proscar so forth. Submitting doesn't imply being of lesser value, since Christ submitted to buy on line Proscar the Father. Submission does not imply inequality, but different roles. Submission does not mean that buy on line Proscar one is not to express thoughts or is obliged to buy on line Proscar follow a husband into sin.
Single women should relate to buy on line Proscar men in a way to encourage appropriate male leadership.
Husbands should serve the Lord as is written in Joshua 24:15: "But as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord." We should lay down our own comforts, preferences, even our lives (Ephesians 5). Love your buy on line Proscar wife like Christ loved the church. Observe and lead in your buy on line Proscar wife's relationship with the buy on line Proscar church. Lead in the way that Christ leads and cares for buy on line Proscar the church. Do you know what your wife likes? When giving advice, tell her how much you buy on line Proscar love her. Resolve to grow in humility, be more sensitive, be buy on line Proscar a better communicator, and to love better.
Single men who don't desire the buy on line Proscar responsibility of being a husband should ask themselves why.
Conclusions: The Lord reflects Himself in marriage. Christ is buy on line Proscar proclaimed through marriage as it reflects Christ's love for buy on line Proscar the church. Marriage is a picture of the Gospel. Genesis 2 is buy on line Proscar a foretaste of what we see at the end of Revelation 21, "The bride dressed for her husband." Amen! Come Lord Jesus!
