Florida Conservatives Fighting Transgender Restroom Law

The Associated Press calls it a “dark ad,” but Florida conservatives are trying to show the potential fallout of transgender anti-discrimination law the city commission passed in Gainesville last year. The law allows “transgendered” people to use either a male or female restroom, the restroom of their choosing. The television advertisement, sponsored by Florida conservatives, shows a blonde girl heading into the women’s restroom from the playground. A scruffy man, lurking outside, rushes into the restroom behind her. The words, “Your City Commission Made This Legal.” The city commission approved the measure, 4-3, last year.

Opponents are seeking to overturn the “protection” law with a March 24 ballot measure. According to an Associated Press report, Citizens for Good Public Policy, the group behind the commercial that aired last summer in Gainesville, collected more than 6,000 signatures to win a referendum. If approved, the repeal measure would also prevent the commission from adding protections beyond what the state requires, including race, color, sex, religion, national origin, age, disability and marital status.

Cain Davis, chairman of Citizens for Good Public Policy, told the AP that his group desire is to contain “government gone wild” and ensuring public safety, pointing out that sex predators could now simply enter a woman’s restroom claiming to be a “transgender” person. “We know when men go into women’s restrooms, bad things can happen,” Davis told the AP.

We pray that Citizens for Good Public Policy will be successful in bringing their referendum before the public in March. Though the AP’snews story clearly portrays the group’s concerns as alarmist, the advertisement is correct in pointing out the potential dangers present within this law, one which accommodates, the AP indicates, “the city’s roughly 100 transgender residents.”

When God’s good creation is turned on its head and such overturning is accommodated, the result is never good for a society, as the Apostle Paulmakes abundantly clear in Romans 1:18-32. There the sum of evil occurs when persons exchange the glory of the Creator for the glory of the creation. The real darkness is not a graphic TV warning of the danger released by bad policy. What's dark is the attempt to conceal the glory of God by all "transgender" efforts and the cowardly laws meant to call evil good.

We can be thankful for the residual ability of decent citizens to be shocked and dismayed into action over the vile perversions that surface in our culture – and the misguided laws that protect them.
